Postcard Pals any occasion card

Like a lot of papercrafters, I enjoy watching Sandy Allnock videos. She’s a great resource for a lot of coloring techniques, but she also gives other good advice. One such tidbit is keeping the rest of the card simple to not detract from your coloring. As someone who really likes card sketches, I needed that bit of advice; my default is layers and more layers. Today, I took her advice and only used a little bit of patterned paper to help tie my chosen colors together.

What is artsy, anyway?

“I didn’t think you were artsy…?”

“Huh… aside from music, I didn’t think I was either.”

It’s still funny to remember the interesting look on my aunt’s face and how she kept glancing at me suspiciously. (If you are wondering, she liked the cards I had just given her.) Although I still have a hard time considering myself artsy, I truly enjoy the process of creating and love sharing the results with others. And here’s some truth: a layer of doubt fell off after visiting the Tate Modern in London this April. Walking around the museum and reading the placards made me consider that my concept of art was simply too narrowly defined.

One of the things I’m playing with these days is watercolor. I still can’t draw to save my life, so a technique worth learning is adding color to heat embossed images. The embossed lines help channel the color but continue to remain a part of the image, as well. You can find out more about the technique here.

I haven’t decided whether or not to make this into a card. Maybe I’ll just slip it in someone’s Bible to give them a reminder of the artwork they are.

One final thought, also shared at the Tate:

Happy Birthday, Human

Hi all! I’m taking the day off to spend time with my hubby and guess what? He’s busy cleaning up his desk and watching the first FIFA game. *laugh* So that gives me time to share this card with you! It’s based on a sketch challenge posted by Freshly Made Sketches just yesterday, so there’s plenty of time for you to play along, too 🙂

Can I tell you that coloring aliens is a lot of fun? You can color them any combination you want to! Of course, I couldn’t resist making one of them green – so predictable. I fussy cut them along with the earth image so that I could play around with the placement. Originally, they were just going to be in the clouds but my husband (who is supposed to be cleaning his desk) thought that was weird, so they got a spaceship and we earthlings got a cloudy day instead. 😉

Thanks for checking out my card and putting up with my silliness. I would tell you I’m not always like this, but that wouldn’t be the truth. Sometimes, I just hide it better 😉

Visit Freshly Made Sketches

A couple of months ago, a friend and I went to the Scrapbook Expo in Orlando. It was nice just to be able to catch up with her and we both enjoyed being surrounded by crafty stuff! I was walking by one booth and trying NOT to let anything else catch my eye when my eyes betrayed me and I noticed the coolest line of stamps from Picket Fence Studios. They’re new to me and so unlike anything I have ever seen before. Let me introduce you to them with the lovely Isabella.

Isn’t she great? She just so captured my imagination that I couldn’t help thinking that she would be most at home in worn blue jeans and camera gear in her army green sack. Charming but marching to her own beat – no formal (straight) frame for her!

Fab is a frame of mind

Today starts a new adventure. I blogged for years (here), but decided to put that to rest a few months ago. While I don’t miss trying to sell product, I definitely miss the flow of sharing ideas and inspiration with such friendly people and can’t wait to share craft, home and food ideas in this fresh new spot.

Today a card 🙂

Fab Fri posted a fab layout which called for using a fab sentiment. And a fab flamingo, too!
